Well recently i've had a little negative criticism due to the fact that I am a Lakers fan but have never actually lived in Los Angeles....I think this is kind of B.S. I have moved all around California my whole life, mostly Northern California like of course Monterey and further in land in places like Mariposa, and Merced (not too fun to live there!), but i've been a Lakers fan since the Showtime days with Magic and have continued that all the way through the dynasty days with Shaq and Kobe. I've seen the best of the best and the worst of the worst, so i'm not the type that just jumped on the band wagon when they started winning, I was cheering when they were at the bottom!. I don't know though because i've never really had a "hometown" team I guess, so can you really blame me for choosing a team and
actually sticking with them even though i've never lived there? GO LAKERS! #1 IN THE WESTERN CONFERENCE BABY!

I understand where you're coming from. My family moved around a lot during my early childhood. Then we finally settled in Mountain View, CA. The Warriors were right across the bay so I had a team to cheer for.
I think everyone should have a reason for cheering on a team that's not from your area. (My favorite NFL team is the Dallas Cowboys and I'm not from Dallas,Texas. My family liked the Niners and I wanted to piss em off so I started cheering for Dallas and this was around the mid/late 80's.)
So, you stick to your Lakers and let everyone else hate. hahaha. Peace.
I think just living in California is enough to warrant being a Lakers fan. It's not possible for every community to have a professional sports team so we have to root for whoever we like right? I've always lived in California and I'm a Chicago Cubs fan just because I thought Ryne Sandberg was the cutest 2nd baseman ever, how's that for a really meaningful reason to pick a team! I'm a Niners fan too even though Salinas is as close to SF as I've ever lived but it seems like if you live anywhere around here, you have to choose either the Niners or the Raiders...
Your on the right track, it shouldn't be about demographics! You chose a team because of the players, how they play, the team as a whole and you have stuck with that choice. You have most likely been a fan of the Lakers longer then some of their newer fans that do live in L.A... you know why you chose to cheer for them, and it is a better reason then just "because I live in L.A."
