Well I just read chapter 10 of Outspoken and I was really intrigued by the segment about the graffiti artist. I liked it because the way that they related it to being art. I don't see how someone could not think of graffiti as an art. Ok I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that some tagging out there is hideuos and I would never want to see it in my neighborhood but it is still art. It is the only way that some of these youth in the inner city have to express themselves. It kind of reminds me of tattooing because when you think of tats you automatically think gang banger or criminal, right? (I'm doing my capstone on tattooing so I have a lot of opinions on the subject as well). Same with tagging, only someone who is a criminal or a gang banger is going to go spray paint some walls, right? Wrong. I loved the idea that they had about allowing some walls to be tagged up as a way to almost make a mural of various graffiti artists' work. It allows these young people to get out there and showcase their art. It gives them some sort of inspiration that maybe they can get out there and be a true artist and do what they love to do. I think it's tight and should be showcased more.

Ok Dale so I have to say I agree to a certain extent. If Tagging is used in a positive way, to give some life to an abanded building or if it is a picture of something beautiful and meaningful then yea ill call it art but I dont think its art when people are tagging their gang name or their nick name or gang related stuff all over the sides of walls or bridges or trucks!
I agree, there should be some area's designated for graffiti artists because I do believe it to be art.
It is true these individuals are looking for ways to express themselves and graffiti makes sense to them.
It's like hip hop artists. When hip hop first began it made sense because it was their way of expressing themselves and it appealed to those in the "hoods."
I'm not saying gang related graffiti is right. What I am saying is graffiti deserves a place in our society. Maybe they need a museum to showcase it. To make these kids feel valued, like they and their art/trade is actually worth something.
how come we have art museum displaying paintings that just look like buckets of paint fell on the canvas and call that art, but not graffiti?
Graffitti is art, not everyone can go out there and tag like graffitti artists do.
I do think it is better when the result is more than a destructive tagged name on/in buildings or on cars and trucks. We have had a lot of graffitti around campus the past couple of years that I don't like to think of as art. It was rushed and looked like it was purposely done to be destructive and disrespectful. Thats the sort of tagging I think gives graffitti a bad name and makes people loose respect for the art form it can be.
