Just a thought
Ok, so I was reading the piece by Frederick Douglass and I came across a quote that kind of intrigued me, it said: "No right was deemed by the fathers of the Government more sacred than the right of speech." This got me thinking about, ok, well if it was so sacred then how did everything come about with the Sedition Acts and not allowing free speech to so many...Then I thought it's probably a front by the goverment to get you to believe what they want you to by fooling you into it. I think that ever since the beginning of our government, actually even back to when we were only colonies, the government only fools you to believe what they think is right. Seriously, the only reason why Christianity is so big is because the leaders of the colonies made everyone go to church everyday or else they would be punished...Is that a way to make someone believe in something, I mean it will because they don't want to be punished, but it is forcing them to do it. Honestly, we as a whole have been fooled into everything that we believe becasue the government says its right, and we just get used to it being there and being believed by so many. I mean I believe in a lot of things, but I don't know, maybe I should question some of the shit that I believe of think is right, who knows where the hell it came from...Maybe i'm trippin.

I don't know if you are right or wrong, or just trippin, but I will say that I agree that the government to some degree is able to control what we believe. I think this is because supposedly we as the people have put much of the government in power, and with power we try and trust that the decisions they make will help our country.
Other people believe everything the government says, or believe heavily in religion because they need something to believe in and follow. While some people have a strong will to think and act for themselves, others still like or feel the need to be a followers and not leaders. once again that is also why some people prefer to put others, like the government, in charge of their lives.
As we have seen with the movie shown today in class and the reading by Margaret Randall is that even though you have a right to free speech the limitations on that speech are up to the majority. Like the protesters Margaret Randall was treated like a criminal.
What we may not think about when we are expressing our views and beliefs, is the consequences, the reactions that may come as a result.
I strongly agree with your ideas that the government has fooled us into believing we have the freedom of speech. Last CSUMB basketball game, I was removed from the gym because I was being to loud. I mention that because all I was doing was exercising my right to the freedom of speech and a higher power regulated my rights. The same thing happens with the government, with the fact that you have the freedom of speech until you say something the government doesn't like. So do we really have the freedom to speech with out the governments control?
You make a great point that if the freedom of speech is truly sacred, then why have acts like the Sedition Act been enacted? This is a real question that we have to explore.
